When you’re looking for a subcompact SUV that provides a comfortable interior and composed handling in Charlotte, NC, check out the 2023 Honda HR-V and the Nissan Kicks. Choosing between these two vehicles isn’t always easy, so let’s take the time to compare some key qualities.
The HR-V was completely redesigned inside and out for its 2023 model year. It now features a longer, wider frame that provides more interior space for passengers. It also welcomes upgraded technology to its interior and an independent rear suspension that promises better handling and an improved ride.
The Kicks didn’t make any notable changes to the 2023 model year. It brings over the same three trim levels and available features from the 2022 model year.
The HR-V introduces an improved interior design that was inspired by the Honda Civics’ redesign. The five-seat SUV can comfortably seat tall and small passengers. Its supportive seats are sufficient for taller passengers and the HR-V also offers plenty of space for cargo behind the rear seats. This SUV comes standard with a 7-inch digital gauge cluster with an analog speedometer and a 7-inch touchscreen that is easy to use. The HR-V does offer a 9-inch touchscreen.
The Kicks is well-built for its starting price, but there is a lot of hard plastics throughout the cabin. Critics found that the front seats lack upper back support and both the first and second row are oddly firm. This discovery suggests that the Kicks wouldn’t be a comfortable ride during longer trips. While the Kicks does provide some cargo space, it is still lacking due to the fact that the rear seats do not fold completely flat.
The HR-Vs handling is better due to the new independent rear suspension. The HR-V is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque which is the same engine that powers the Civic. During acceleration testing, it took a 9.4-second launch to reach 60 mph. The continuously variable automatic transmission provides a smooth shifting experience. The HR-V is an overall fun driving experience as it remains composed around turns and absorbs bumps in the road. The cabin also muffled noise from the exterior.
The Kicks is underwhelming at times and is better suited for city driving. Critics found that the Kicks took 10.7 seconds to reach 60 mph, which is one of the slowest in the subcompact SUV class. If you are trying to reach higher speeds the lackluster 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine struggles to impress. The handling on the Kicks isn’t very responsive and there’s not much feedback from steering either.
